About the Band
27strings is known for its strong vocals, great harmonies, and fast-paced fiddle tunes. Playing traditional as well as contemporary bluegrass, 27strings performs throughout the Bay Area at bluegrass festivals, farmers’ markets, cafes, restaurants, and private parties.
The band formed in 2009 with the traditional instrumentation of Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys inspiring the name 27strings. The band includes Tom Bull on lead vocals and guitar; Greg Frees on mandolin; Hildy Licht on banjo and guitar; Rachel Gage on the fiddle; Howard Gage on guitar and banjo; and Suzanne Suwanda on the bass. All the members of the band sing. With the versatility of six dynamic voices, the band's repertoire includes arrangements with varied combinations of two-, three- and four-part harmonies, creating an energy that distinguishes 27strings performances.
